Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot believes that the need for videogame hardware like the Xbox One and PS4 is coming to an end, according to an interview with Variety.

Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot believes that the need for videogame hardware like the Xbox One and PS4 is coming to an end, according to an interview with Variety.

With the introduction of streaming and cloud-based gaming, Guillemot believes that the days of console gaming are coming to an end as consumers look to be able to play their favorite games on one device.

“I think we will see another generation, but there is a good chance that step-by-step we will see less and less hardware,” Guillemot told Variety. “With time, I think streaming will become more accessible to many players and make it not necessary to have big hardware at home. There will be one more console generation and then after that, we will be streaming, all of us.”

This eventual evolution of games that Guillemot believes is coming could see gaming follow the film and television industry in perhaps to a Netflix-like model. Services like that have been introduced in the past, but have yet to take hold among a wide consumer base.

The video game landscape is one that is impossible to predict. Nintendo has always relied on innovation when it comes to its hardware to shape the future of the industry, while Microsoft and Sony have chosen power and performance over anything else.

Microsoft, however, has been moving its games more towards a streaming-like platform with the appearance of the Xbox Game Pass. This monthly service gives Xbox One owners access to a large library of first and third-party titles.
