A pickup truck rolled onto a field during a youth soccer match in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon. Two people died: a boy aged six and a man aged 35. According to People, emergency crews received calls about the crash at Stryker Sports Complex in mid-afternoon, and police are still investigating how it happened.
Capt. Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department stated that officers arrived to find bystanders giving medical aid on the field’s western side. The truck sat nearby, with the driver and two children still at the vehicle. Police identified the dead as Cole Adrian and Nicholas Schafer, both from McPherson, and stated that the two were not related.
Ten people were hurt, including five children between five and nine years old and five adults ranging from 28 to 68. Moses described the injuries as running from minor to severe. An 11th person went to a hospital for a medical issue that police stated was unrelated to the crash. Police Chief Joe Sullivan stated that the families now face an “unimaginable loss.”
Kansas law on fatal vehicle crashes
The driver is a Garden City woman, 34. Police first took her into custody and then released her, stating in a release that she walked free pending toxicology results and a mechanical inspection of the truck. No one has been charged. Police added that she holds a valid license, has no active warrants, and has cooperated, and that investigators interviewed more than 30 witnesses.
Police believe one of her children was playing soccer at the complex, on a different field. “We’re still working to determine how and why this happened,” Moses stated, and he asked the public to send in any video. Police have not released the driver’s name. Mayor Lily Wu and Governor Laura Kelly each issued condolences.
Local reports state that police plan to present an initial case to the Sedgwick County district attorney early this week, and the office will share updates as appropriate. Under Kansas law, involuntary manslaughter covers a killing committed recklessly, during certain traffic offenses, or while driving under the influence. A reckless killing is a level five person felony, and the drunk driving version is level four. Which statute, if any, applies depends on what investigators and prosecutors conclude.
The complex called off every event for now. A state girls flag football tournament, the first of its kind, was under way on a neighboring field, and its organizers suspended the remaining games. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office also stated that social media claims linking one of its deputies to the driving were false. Wichita police stated that they are the source for verified details.
Investigators elsewhere are also working toward a cause in a deadly crash, as a Memphis cruiser hit a car carrying six people.
