How to complete the Johto Collection Challenge in Pokémon Go

Can you catch them all?

The final collection challenge in Pokémon Go for January 2021 is the Johto Collection. It features nine Pokémon, some of them you can capture in the wild, some of them will appear in raids, and a handful will only appear after completing a specific field research task. You’ll need to explore your neighborhood to capture all of them, and when you do, you’ll earn a new collection badge for your effort. This is also another way to advance your Elite Collector’s medal.

How to catch all Johto Collection Challenge Pokémon

Here are all nine Pokémon you need to catch for the Johto Collection Challenge.

  • Chikorita
  • Cyndaquil
  • Larvitar
  • Miltank
  • Murkrow
  • Smeargle
  • Sudowoodo
  • Sunkern
  • Totodile

Many of these will be found in the wild, and they will receive a boosted spawn rate during the Johto Celebration event. You can expect to encounter Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Sunkern, Murkrow, and Miltank will appear in the wild.

Sudowoodo will be a Pokémon you need to capture from a specific field research task. You can obtain these research tasks by spinning the PokéStop dials or any of the Gym ones you encounter while walking around. You can carry up to three tasks at a time.

Larvitar might be one of the harder ones. You can only capture it by participating in one-star raids or by hatching it from a five-kilometer egg. You can obtain the five-kilometer eggs from any of the PokéStops or Gym dials you spin. Because the Pokémon inside the eggs are random, we recommend exploring your area and looking to find a Larvitar featured in a one-star raid.

The last Pokémon featured in this line up is Smeargle, and it will not be featured as a boost wild spawn, as a five-kilometer egg, or in any of the raids. You may have to explore your area and find it out in the wild. This will be the wild card of the set. You might be able to capture it by taking pictures of your Pokémon, as this was how you originally had to catch it when Smeargle initially released.

All players have until January 31 at 8 PM in your local time zone to complete the Johto Collection Challenge.
