Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire’s audio director confirmed Obsidian has recorded voice lines for each line of dialogue in the upcoming CRPG.
Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire will feature full voice acting, surpassing an initial stretch goal originally promised by the game’s developers on Fig.
The news comes from a video interview between Obsidian Entertainment’s Aarik Dorobiala and Pillars of Eternity II’s audio director, Justin Bell. In the interview, Dorobiala asked Bell how much voice acting the “Double the V.O.!” stretch goal would bring to players after Obsidian originally promised “twice as much voice over” work in exchange for $2.4 million total in funds. That’s when Bell revealed that Obsidian decided to do voice acting for the entire game’s conversations instead.
“We actually did more than double the V.O.,” Bell said. “We recorded every line of dialogue in the game.”
Recording Pillars of Eternity II’s entire dialogue isn’t an easy feat. Designed as a classic CRPG mirroring such games as Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment, the full game promises both lengthy main quests and side quests for players to experience throughout Eora, a fantasy world inhabited by over half a dozen various races, from humans to elves. Enormous, immersive, and filled with plenty of dialogue between players and NPCs, full voice acting is a rare treat for an old-school RPG.
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire launches on May 8 for PC, Linux, and Mac. The game is also planned for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with all three console releases slated for Q4 2018. No official release date has been announced yet for the game’s console launch.
