Speculation: Who will be the next DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

E3 2019 is coming soon, so we expect there will be a lot of new information coming in the following weeks. One piece of information that we are still in the dark about is the remaining DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The announcement of Joker being the first DLC character was release back in December at the Game Awards, and it shocked fans all over the world. Joker has now been made available to play, yet no new information on the future DLC for the game has been unveiled. Nintendo will have a presence in this year’s E3; we can imagine that they will finally share what the future holds for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Joker is the first of five DLC characters that are coming to Ultimate. There’s still potentially four new DLC characters that Nintendo can reveal in E3. While we don’t necessarily believe that Nintendo will reveal all four remaining DLC characters, anything is possible. Either way, we have four video game characters that we would love to see as DLC for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

1. Sora

Despite fan’s pleas, it doesn’t seem likely that Kingdom Hearts III will be making it to the Nintendo Switch. While the Switch can handle games that are in the Unreal Engine, like Kingdom Hearts III, the game is still too complicated for the Switch to handle. With that said, that doesn’t mean the Kingdom Hearts collections can’t make their way to the Switch. The collections contain older Kingdom Hearts games. These older Kingdom Hearts games are far less complex than KH III, and the Switch should be able to handle those games.

It is not as if a Kingdom Hearts hasn’t released a game on a Nintendo console before. Several Kingdom Hearts games were released on some of Nintendo’s handhelds. So Kingdom Hearts isn’t a stranger to Nintendo, which means it is not out of the realm of possibility of seeing Sora, the lead protagonist of the series, in a Super Smash Bros. game.

The biggest hurdle of Sora appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the fact that Disney may own Sora. Kingdom Hearts is a Disney franchise, and ownership of Sora may actually belong to Disney. Disney is known to be difficult to work with, so trying to get Sora into Ultimate may be all but impossible. However, imagine the hype for the DLC if they can bring him to Ultimate.

2. Banjo-Kazooie

The gaming duo that originated on the N64, Banjo and Kazooie are some of the most beloved video game mascots ever. Despite not having a full game released in eleven years, fans have been clamoring to see Banjo and Kazooie in a Super Smash Bros. game since the very beginning. Banjo is the backpack-wearing bear, who carries his good friend Kazooie, a bird, around as they travel a strange land.

The first two games of the Banjo-Kazooie series were first released on the N64. They proved to be very popular, and many fans see Banjo and Kazooie as Nintendo icons. Notwithstanding the fact that Microsoft now owns banjo and Kazooie, people all over the world feel that they deserve to be in Super Smash Bros. Even the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, isn’t against having Banjo-Kazooie in Super Smash Bros. Having Banjo-Kazooie in a Super Smash Bros. game is a long time coming, and them being DLC for Ultimate may finally be the time we get to see it.

3. Crash Bandicoot

Nintendo has Mario, Sega has Sonic, and Microsoft has Master Chief. And for a time, Sony had Crash Bandicoot. While it is arguable who the mascot was for the first PlayStation, it was between Crash or Spyro the dragon, for our money it was always Crash. Though the bandicoot has since branched out into other consoles outside PlayStation, in our hearts of hearts he remains a PlayStation icon.

Having Crash be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC will be the ultimate dream for any gamer growing up in the nineties. Having Mario, Sonic and Crash be playable in the same game will be the clash of the nineties icons. With the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy on the Nintendo Switch, Crash has taken the first step to be accepting into Nintendo’s long line-up of gaming icons. If Cloud Strife was able to make it into Super Smash Bros. without having appeared in a Nintendo game beforehand, then Crash certainly has a stronger claim to be in Smash Bros.

4. Master Chief

The pipe dream. Master Chief has yet to appear in a console that isn’t an Xbox; can Super Smash Bros. Ultimate change that? Whereas Sony essentially gave up having a mascot to represent the PlayStation, Microsoft continues to have Master Chief be the de-facto representative of the Xbox brand. The Halo game series is one of the most popular first-person shooter franchises of all time. Fans are anxiously waiting for any news on the upcoming Halo Infinite at this year’s E3.

This year’s E3 could be Master Chief’s time. After being strangely dormant after the mix response towards Halo 5, Master Chief is due for a comeback. What better comeback story is there than having a new game coming, AND appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Xbox is the last major console that has yet to be represented in Super Smash Bros. Having Master Chief be in the game will finally fill in that gap, and officially make Super Smash Bros. as the ultimate video game crossover. It will no longer just be a fighting game crossover with only Nintendo characters; it will be a fighting game crossover with all of the biggest icons in gaming.
