Everything from the August 7 Pokemon trailer.

On Monday, Aug. 5, Pokémon teased a Pokémon Sword and Shield announcement. The resulting two days of excitement-induced agony resulted in a lot of speculation, following the announcement of the Aug. 7, Nintendo Pokemon-focused Direct.

The Direct in question was another Pokémon Sword and Shield trailer. There’s been a lot of information in a few short hours. Because there’s been so much in a short amount of time, here’s a summary of what came out today.

Galarian Forms

Another notch in a specific famous leak’s belt. Like Alola before it, the Galar region is going to have variants on existing Pokémon. Galarian forms shown in the trailer included: Weezing, Zigzagoon, and Linoone.

New Pokémon

Alongside the new Galarian variants are some new Pokémon. The new Pokémon shown in the trailer are Obstagoon and Morpeko. Obstagoon is the first Galar specific evolution for an existing line of Pokémon and evolves from Linoone (although conditions for evolution aren’t yet known). The Pokemon will know the new move Obstruct.

Morpeko is the poster child for the Snickers tagline “You’re not you when you’re hungry” and a future meme of a hamster. The little guy changes appearance and type depending on its hunger — quite the relatable rodent. In Full Belly form, it is Electric-type and a charming little guy. In Hangry form, it becomes a violent Dark-type. It will know the move Aura Wheel, which also changes types depending on the Pokémon’s hunger.

New Rivals

Two new rivals came out, Bede and Marine. It seems evident that Bede is a possible return to the jerk rival that fans saw in the first generations. He is specially chosen and endorsed by Pokemon Galar League chairman Rose, who is also probably evil. He is competing to become Champion but seems to have other motives as well.

Marine is our other rival. Despite her relations to Team Yell, the opposing team for the Galar region, she is calm and calculated and competitive. With her partner Morpeka, she hopes to become the Champion of the Galar region.

Team Yell

This time the enemy team isn’t some power-hungry team that manipulates and experiments on Pokémon, but instead a bunch of hardcore fans. Team Yell is annoying, loud, fans of Marine. They want nothing more than to see her win Champion and are willing to hinder and heckle other trainers to see it happen.

Jobs

A new feature that was shown only to Japanese audiences originally is the addition of jobs. Trainers can look for available jobs at the Rotomi in Pokémon Centers and will be able to send Pokémon from their boxes to any job they accept. Certain types are better suited for other tasks.

That about wraps up the big news from the Aug. 7 trailer. The speculations about a Direct style presentation were ultimately incorrect, but that doesn’t mean the trailer wasn’t exciting. Pokémon Sword and Shield release on Nov. 15, 2019. Look out for more upcoming content.
