Does Age of Wonders: Planetfall Have Co-Op?

The big question behind any good strategy game is if you can team-up with a buddy and conquer the unrelenting enemy in a ruthless campaign for dominance, and Age of Wonders: Planetfall is no different.

Age of Wonder: Planetfall released today for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s a tactical, 4X turn-based strategy game where players choose one of the six available factions and engage in combat, diplomacy, and consistent expansion to ensure their empire stands as the victors. Like any good strategy game, these types of drawn-out campaigns are great to play with a friend. However, some people are curious if there’s any co-op with the game? Given the rich history of the game’s developer, Paradox Interactive, it serves as an excellent question to ask.

The Co-Op in Age of Wonders: Planetfall

The short answer is yes; players can engage in multiplayer games in Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Because it’s a turn-based strategy game, players don’t all have to own the game. Paradox Interactive made it easy for multiple people to play the game at the same time by enabling a hot-seat mode. In hot-seat mode, players take turns on a single device taking their turn. The one downside to this is that players are all aware of what the others have. But if you’re all good sports and friends, this factor should not break the game or make unenjoyable.

However, if you and your friend both own the game, the two of you can engage each other in the multiplayer mode. In this mode, you’ll take turns as you would in the hot-seat, only both parties are unaware of what the other is doing. Each side must learn knowledge about the other by exploring or engaging in diplomacy. The two parties can choose to remain transparent or share their resource and goals to have them achieve victory.

While in the hot-seat mode, you cannot play in a multiplayer game with other players. You have to choose either of the choices, not both. You cannot have two players playing two different factions from the same console against other players who are not in the room.

To choose an entirely co-op based game, go up to the menu and click the “teams” option, located under the number of players you want to have for the session. You can break up the teams however you like. For example, you can have you and your ally against all of the AI units, or it’s a free-for-all with you and your friend teaming up to join the fray. You can decide how the teams work, as long as you ensure the team’s numbers coincide with your choices.

So grab a buddy, get some background music playing, because Age of Wonders: Planetfall is out right now for anyone looking for science-fiction, strategy adventure.
