How to create a furnace and smelt ore in Terraria

Melt down things to create bars of minerals.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

When you want to create stronger weapons, more durable armor, and higher quality tools, you need to be able to have a furnace at the ready in Terraria. The furnace allows you to smelt down ore to create bars of the materials you find in the game, such as copper, iron, gold, tungsten, and others hidden throughout the game. With a furnace at the ready, you can use any of the anvils to its full potential.

The furnace takes a few materials before you can make it. You will need these:

  • 20 Stone Blocks
  • 4 Pieces of Wood
  • 3 Torches

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to craft a furnace immediately once you have these ingredients. You first need to craft a workbench. You can make these once you have 10 pieces of any of the wood in the game.

After you have the workbench, approach it with your furnace ingredients and craft it. You can place the furnace down to use to melt down minerals to create various bars of material. To optimize your time, you best place it down nearby your workbench and anvil, to prevent yourself from running all over the place to craft items that require different crafting stations.

The furnace is extremely helpful to progress in Terraria. Without it, you won’t have access to the higher quality armor, weapons, and tools in the game. You can expect to spend plenty of time mining, so having a furnace sooner rather than later will leap you further into the game.
