How to get a metal coat in Pokémon Go

Evolve your favorite Pokémon with a special item.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

For those seeking to evolve their Scyther into Scizor and Onix into Steelix in Pokémon Go, you need an item called a metal coat. Once you give it to your Pokémon and have the required number of candies to evolve them, they will transform into their more powerful forms, becoming Steel-types. While the Pokémon candies may not be too difficult to locate, the metal coat is a far more challenging item, and much of it requires quite a bit of luck and patience. Ultimately, you can pick up the metal coat by visiting several PokéStop dials.

All you have to do is spin the dial of a PokéStop or a Gym and hope you receive a metal coat as a reward. That’s the most straightforward way to obtain this useful item. You also can get one from the seven-day research breakthrough, which you can finish by completing a research task once a day. At the end of the seven-day streak, you receive a good chunk of XP, one of the evolutionary items, and a guaranteed Pokémon encounter. Luckily, spinning dials and completing the research breakthrough seven-day streak go hand-in-hand.

Unfortunately, you could receive several other evolutionary items from these drops, so obtaining the item is up in the air. You may have to spend quite a bit of time going between multiple PokéStops and Gyms before seeing it.
