January 2018 NPD report is out and Nintendo Switch has been named as the best selling console. Monster Hunter World was named as the best selling video game of the month.
In January 2018, Nintendo Switch was once again the most sold console in the United States, according to the NPD Group monthly sales data. Despite being the most sold console, Nintendo Switch wasn’t the one to generate the most revenue: it was Sony’s PS4.
Last month, hardware dollar sales of $278 million are the highest level achieved since the $323 million sold in January 2011. Over 1 million units were sold in January, the highest tally since the same month in 2011.
All the big three platforms are said to have performed very well, considering that the gap between the top selling and the third best selling was only 3% in dollar sales. Interestingly, Nintendo 3DS unit sales were the best recorded in a January month since 2013.
Talking about software sales, Monster Hunter World was the most sold game in the month of January 2018, preceding another top-level entry for the month, Dragon Ball FighterZ. Another January entry, even though it launched very late in the month, was PS4 exclusive brawler Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, which managed to access the top 20 in the 19th spot.
At the third spot, we can find Call of Duty WWII preceding PUBG, for whom have not been counted digital sales (** no digital sales; * no PC digital sales).
