In today’s financial results announcement, Nintendo revealed that 17.79 million Switch consoles have been sold worldwide since its 2017 launch.

The figure is 2.29 million units more than the company predicted to sell and destroys the total lifetime sales of the Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo’s last home console, by a large margin.

In December 2017, the Switch reached a sales milestone of nearly 15 million units worldwide. This means that the Switch has sold over 2 million more units in the past four months. The Switch also sold more units in its first year than the PlayStation 2 managed to do in the same timeframe.

The sales figures have made Nintendo a bit more ambitious for its next financial meeting. The company forecasts shipping 20 million units by next year and is looking to sell over 100 million pieces of software during the same timeframe.

With blockbuster titles like Mario Tennis Aces and Super Smash Bros. coming out this year, as well as the rumored reveal of the next Pokemon and Metroid game for Switch being shown at this year’s E3 in June, those forecasts are more than likely to be reached or even surpassed within the next 12 months.

Nintendo’s current big title, Nintendo Labo, outsold Sony’s popular God of War title in the Japanese charts last week, so the company is well on its way to achieving its goals.
