Niantic has announced that Snorlax, one of the rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go, will be the next research reward in Pokémon Go starting today.

Field Research rewards are part of the game’s mission feature, known as Research Tasks. By completing a quest once every day, players earn stickers. After collecting seven stickers, trainers unlock the option to capture a legendary or rare Pokémon.

The first three Pokémon to be offered as rewards were the Kanto legendary bird Pokémon Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos. That makes Snorlax the first non-legendary Pokémon to be added as a reward since the feature was first introduced.

The Snorlax, if captured successfully, will know the exclusive move Body Slam. This move can only be taught to a Snorlax captured during this event and will not be known by one caught in the wild.

Snorlax’s inclusion into the game means that Articuno, the previous reward, will now no longer be available for trainers to capture. Articuno will return as a legendary raid sometime in the future, however, alongside a shiny variant.

Alongside Snorlax’s inclusion, Niantic has announced a brand new line of missions that, if completed, will give trainers the chance to catch even more rare Kanto Pokémon. These include Pikachu, Eevee, and Ditto with the latter being one of the hardest Pokémon to find in Pokémon Go.

Snorlax is expected to be a mission reward till the end of the month, when a new Pokémon will take its place. With Niantic prioritising Kanto Pokémon as rewards at this time, the next research reward Pokémon could include Aerodactyl, Chansey, or other rare Kanto Pokémon in the future.
