Sega’s retro throwback Sonic Mania has sold over one million units around the world, a new report from Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu reveals.

The news, which comes straight from Sega, is based on Sonic Mania’s sales numbers around the world and across platforms. The game originally launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in August 2017, meaning Sonic Mania reached one million sales during its first 12 months.

Sonic Mania casts players as Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, and Knuckles as they run their way through 2D platforming levels inspired by the original Sonic Genesis series. Development was led by Christian “Taxman” Whitehead, a known Sonic fangame creator, and the game launched to critical acclaim from Sonic fans and newcomers alike.

That popularity (and the game’s sales) will probably increase in the coming months ahead, too. The game’s rerelease, Sonic Mania Plus, is scheduled for this summer. The upcoming edition introduces a New Game+ mode called “Encore Mode,” two new characters, and four-player support for the game’s multiplayer Competition Mode. Sonic Mania owners will receive the new version’s content as a paid DLC offering, Famitsu reports, whereas first-timers can pick up Sonic Mania Plus as its own standalone rerelease.

In the meantime, Sega is interested in returning to its ’90s classic hits once again. Sega Ages is coming to Nintendo Switch, letting players purchase and play through classic Sega hits from the Genesis and arcade era. If the series proves popular, producer Kagasei Shimomura wants to bring Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast titles to the Switch as well.
