‘There’s a Lot of Scammers Out Here’: An Alabama Woman Says a Domino’s Driver Asked for a Tip, Then Added $10 to Her Order Himself

An Alabama woman is warning Domino’s customers to check their receipts after she says a delivery driver added a $10 tip to her order without asking. According to Subplot, Keda Moe said her original order came to $24.24 when she placed it through the Huntsville location.

She said the driver asked her directly, “You’re not gonna give me no tip?” before leaving. Moe said nothing seemed off in the moment. It wasn’t until she looked at her bank account the following day that she spotted the extra $10.

“Afterwards, he went in and added on his own a ten-dollar tip,” she said. She contacted the store with her receipts as proof, spoke with a manager, and says Domino’s refunded the disputed amount. “I have all the receipts,” she said. “I’m just coming on here to let you all know that there’s a lot of scammers out here.”

What the law says about adding a tip without permission

There’s no reliable federal data tracking how often delivery workers add unauthorized tips, though regulators have gone after similar misconduct before. In 2021, the FTC returned nearly $60 million to Amazon delivery drivers after finding the company illegally withheld tips customers had already paid, showing the agency treats tip manipulation as a real enforcement priority, not just a customer-service issue.

In Alabama specifically, an employee who knowingly adds a charge a customer never agreed to could be looking at more than a refund and an awkward conversation with a manager. Under Alabama Code § 13A-8-2, theft of property covers knowingly exerting unauthorized control over someone else’s money with intent to deprive them of it. That includes conduct traditionally known as theft by deception or embezzlement.

For an amount like $10, that would likely fall under fourth-degree theft, a Class A misdemeanor carrying up to a year in jail and a fine as high as $6,000, since Alabama treats any theft of $500 or less at that level. Customers who spot a charge they never authorized have a few real options beyond just calling the store.

The FTC recommends contacting the seller first, but if that doesn’t resolve things, credit card users can invoke the Fair Credit Billing Act, which covers disputing unauthorized charges and charges for the wrong amount. Debit card holders have separate, generally weaker protections, so acting quickly matters more, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends reporting an unauthorized transaction as soon as it’s spotted rather than waiting.

The simplest prevention is comparing a delivery receipt against the actual bank statement afterward, especially since tips added after the fact, the way Moe described, won’t necessarily show up until the charge posts. It’s a habit that matters regardless of the job; even legitimate tip income can add up fast for service workers, which is exactly why disputes over who’s entitled to what amount tend to get contentious.
