How to beat Kyogre in Pokémon Go – Weaknesses, counters, strategies

The waves crash around it.

Kyogre is one of the many legendary Pokémon you can capture in Pokémon Go. It only appears in five-star raids and at limited times, so you can’t always expect an opportunity to go out and battle it. This time around, Kyogre will be appearing alongside Groudon in five-star raids starting on January 19 until the 26 for the Hoenn Celebration event. Make sure to jump into the raids while you have the chance. If you plan to use it for PvP, we’ve listed out the best moveset to teach it to make sure you use the best one. But how do you beat it?

Kyogre weaknesses

Kyogre is a Water-type Pokémon. It’s weak to Electric and Grass-type attacks, but it’s resistant to Fire, Ice, Steel, and Water-type moves. You likely want to use a Grass-type Pokémon when fighting it, as any Water-type attacks it uses during the raid will not do too much damage.

Best Pokémon to counter Kyogre

The three most recommended Pokémon to use against Kyogre in the raid include Sceptile, Raikou, and Zapdos.

Sceptile is a Grass-type Pokémon. It’ll be able to do some pretty decent damage against Kyogre, and any Water or Electric-type attack it does will not harm it too much, meaning it can endure for a while in the raid. It has a maximum CP of 2,757, an attack of 223, a defense of 169, and a stamina of 172. The best moveset it can use during the raid is bullet seed for its fast attack, and then leaf blade and frenzy plant.

The next choice we recommend is Raikou, it’s an Electric-type Pokémon. While Raikou won’t be able to endure as much damage as Sceptile can as a Grass-type, it’s capable of doing plenty of damage with its Electric-type attacks. It has a maximum CP of 3,902, an attack of 241, a defense of 195, and a stamina of 207. The best moveset it should have during the raid is volt switch for its fast attack and then wild charge and thunderbolt.

The last choice to have in your raid party is Zapdos, another legendary Electric-type. Much like Raikou, it can’t endure as much as Grass-type Pokémon can, but it can deal plenty of damage to the purely Water-type Kyogre. It has a maximum CP of 3,987, an attack of 253, a defense of 185, and a stamina of 207. The best moveset it can use against Kyorge is thunder shock for its fast attack, and then thunder bolt and zap cannon for its charge moves.
