For the most part, I don’t care when a friend starts playing a game on Steam. If I’m planning to game with that person, I know this in advance and coordinate appropriately. Therefore, it’s a bit annoying seeing a pop-up every time a friend launches a game, especially if there’s a bug in the game and it shows the friend launching every few minutes. If you’re here because this is going on with your gaming experiences right now, we feel your pain.
With that in mind, here’s how to disable Steam notifications for every time a friend launches a game.
How to Disable Steam Notifications
Click on Friends > View Friends List
Click on Manage Friends List Settings (Gear Icon)
Click on Notifications
Uncheck When a Friend Joins a Game
It’s as easy as that. Removing the check from that box ensures you don’t get a notification each time a friend starts playing a game. This option should make your time in your games a better experience, but it’s also a useful trick for live streamers and content creators who don’t want pop-ups ruining their game captures.
There are also a few other options too that allow you to customize the notifications that you’re receiving, including when friends come online when you receive invitations to chat rooms, or even invitations to events, which can happen when you’re following an active group on the community section. These can all be turned on or off for a pop-up, or play a sound instead.
We hope that makes that experience with Steam Friends more enjoyable!
