How to get Summer Shells in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

It's a seasonal thing.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is an interesting contrast to much of the games available these days. While it is very obvious about the fact that it wants you to play every day, it doesn’t want you playing for hours. Everything you need to do each day can be finished up in about twenty minutes, and after that, it is up to you to decide how much time you want to put in.

One of the ways it tries to get people to log on for a short time each day is by having certain items only be available at certain times of the year. Fish and bugs will change monthly, or special events will limit the time an NPC spends on the island. Other NPCs show up once a week, or can be tied to special things like shooting stars.

When it comes to Summer Shells, these will only be available in the game, you guessed it, during the summer. Seasons in the game work the way they do in real life, so people in the southern hemisphere have been able to get Summer Shells already, but if you live in the northern hemisphere, your first chance to get them will arrive soon.

Summer Shells will be available in the game between the below dates.

  • North hemisphere – June 1 to Aug. 31
  • South hemisphere – Jan. 1 to March 31

Summer Shells are quite rare, appearing as small blue shells on the beach, so you might want to make sure you fully scout the beach a couple of times each day to see if they spawn for you. You will need them for specific recipes, but as we are in the Northern Hemisphere, we won’t know more about those recipes until we can get our hands on some shells.
