Gamescom 2018 is over, so it’s time to look back at what was so special about this year’s event.
Hundreds of games were on offer, but only a few really stood out above the rest. Five games that we got to play at the show really excited us for the upcoming year, so we wanted to share our astonishment with everyone to get them hyped up for the official releases of these titles.
With limited timing, we couldn’t play every game at the show that was available, so we’re focusing on games that we got time with. This means titles like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Cyberpunk 2077, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and a host of other titles won’t be included on this list.
With that in mind and in no particular order, here are the five best games from this year’s Gamescom.
Devil May Cry 5
Capcom pulled out all the stops at this year’s Gamesom with two great games at the show. While Resident Evil 2 was a delight, it was Devil May Cry 5 that took the award.
The high-octane action mixed with a new battle mechanic and frantic gameplay is sure to excite anyone who plays it. The game is already full of things to do and makes us salivate at what the full release will look like.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy
Spyro is back and more charming than ever. The remastered version looks to be a delight with a lot of love going into every part of the game.
Gamescom gave fans a chance to play Spyro: Year of the Dragon remastered for the first time and it didn’t disappoint. Alongside the fluid controls, being able to ride a skateboard again just made the experience that much better.

Biomutant
Biomutant from THQ Nordic has been delayed until the summer of 2019. It missed out on E3 and made its second playable debut at this year’s Gamescom.
The game revolves around a small creature running, gunning, and chopping his way through vast wilderness filled with dangers of all kinds awaiting to stop his journey. You’re constantly evolving your creature, changing the way he looks and what his abilities are by interacting with the environment and mutating it to make it more powerful.
Think Devil May Cry for furries and you’ll understand exactly what this game is about.
Rage 2
What do you get when you combine the satisfying shooting from Doom and an open world full of engineering? Well, that would be Rage 2.
From top to bottom, this game is packed with enough content to keep you playing for hours. The game combines the shooting of Doom with Bioshock’s abilities, and Bethesda’s open world formula to create an unmatched experience.
It’s the best of everything combined into one neat package. What’s not to love?
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
There’s something about Sekiro’s showing at Gamescom that sold it to us in one fell swoop.
The game is basically a beginner’s friendly Dark Souls and offers two lives instead of the permadeath system now in From Software’s other titles. It also features smooth grappling hook controls that can get you out of a tricky fight in a pinch, as well as great combat in general.
It still retains that classic difficulty that these games are known for, but it also offers something different that makes it more than just another Dark Souls-like game.
