PS5 UI suggests a next-gen Call of Duty: Modern Warfare may be on the way

Trying to remain modern.

As the hype for Season One of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War intensifies, the game may soon be competing on next-gen platforms with another juggernaut in the franchise. This speculation comes after an image surfaced online of the PS5 UI offering a user the ability to upgrade the 2019 smash hit, Modern Warfare.

The photo, originally uploaded by Reddit user asjonsey99, displays the console listing a PS5 edition of Modern Warfare in the Game Versions tab. Typically, the tab is used for players to find and download free upgrades of their cross-gen games.

In the Reddit post, the user explains that the PS5 version’s game page then became “locked” after attempting to upgrade to it. In general, on PlayStation 4, a lock symbol does accompany games that either aren’t owned by users or aren’t available for preload quite yet.

Although this could be a rare system error, it would make sense of recent rumblings of incoming Modern Warfare content. In late November, Infinity Ward lead artist Reed Shingledecker took to Twitter, claiming that more content is in store for the year-old FPS and hopes “some info gets released soon, so people know what’s going on.”

If true, although unexpected, a next-gen Modern Warfare would create a more convenient ecosystem for fans on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Activision announced in October that seasonal progression can be universally made by playing either Warzone, Black Ops Cold War, or Modern Warfare. Thus, with an upgraded Modern Warfare, those who play all three would get a full next-gen experience all around.

In the meantime, Call of Duty will still be making headlines with loads of new material coming to Black Ops Cold War’s first season on December 10. The season is confirmed to implement a Battle Pass system, with new maps and modes.
