The summer is here, which means it’s the best time to go to the beach. At least that’s how the old stereotype goes, teens and young people hanging out on the beach, with the sun shining brightly in the sky. While it is undoubtedly an idyllic moment, not everyone wants to spend their free time on the beach.
Some of us, including myself, would rather spend their summer days indoors, with the air condition turned on. With that said, there’s nothing more fun to do indoors than to play some good old fashion video games, and there are plenty of great games to play during the summer. A few come to my mind right this moment.
5 Best Games for the Summer
These are the very best video games to play during the summer. You may not be outside, playing on the beach or in the pool, but at least you can play a video game that makes you feel like you’re out.
Super Mario Party (Or Any Mario Party)
Get ready to party in the newest game to the Mario Party series! The original 4-player Mario Party series board game mode that fans love is back! Enjoy 80 brand new minigames while playing in a variety of modes like Sound Stage, River Survival, Toad’s Rec Room, Partner Party, and Challenge Road.
The Mario Party games are some of the best when it comes to local, competitive gaming. You and your closes friends play as Mario characters, and you compete against each other to collect the most stars and coins. The most recent entry in the series, Super Mario Party on the Nintendo Switch, is a great game to play during the summers. Though honestly, any of the games in Mario Party series would be great to play during the summers. Even the bad Mario Party games are enjoyable to play if you and your friends are in the right mindset.
Super Mario Sunshine
This is a trailer for Super Mario Sunshine which was on a DVD that came free with NGC Magazine. Even though this DVD came out in 2002 I think the trailer is from E3 2001.
Games set in a tropical island are the pinnacles of summer. Super Mario Sunshine is the most tropical of all the Mario games. As Mario, you use a robotic water pump to clean up Isle Delfino. Delfino gets overrun with a mysterious painter, and it is up to Mario to save the day. The tropical setting and the use of water makes Super Mario Sunshine the perfect game to play during the summer. Potentially, you can use one hand to hold the controller, and the second hand to drink some water out of a coconut. It would almost feel as if you were actually at the tropics!

Sea of Thieves is an okay game. However, it’s a fantastic summer game. You play as a pirate, and sail the seas, collecting treasure and fighting against skeletons. If you’re lucky, you can even face against the Kraken or Megalodon. You spend most of your playtime on the ocean, traveling from one island to the next with your ship. Who needs the real ocean and beaches, when you can experience that in Sea of Thieves?
Take a look at this gameplay launch trailer to get a final sneak peek at Sunset Overdrive, launching exclusively on Xbox One on October 28.
Maybe it’s because of its bright, sunny colors, yet I often think of Sunset Overdrive as a summertime game. Sunset Overdrive is an Xbox One Exclusive-game that centers on you surviving in an apocalypse where mutants run rampant. Despite it featuring mutated humans and potentially the end of the world, the game is bright, colorful, and full of humor. Developed by Insomniac Games, the same studio whom later developed Spider-Man, the smooth mechanics makes the gameplay stand out. Traveling through the city in the game is simple and a joy to do. Sunset Overdrive is a lighthearted game, filled with wacky humor and bright colors, making it the ideal game to play in the summer.

Before games like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Sea of Thieves popularized the idea of sailing the vast seas, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker already impressed players with its watery setting. Wind Waker got criticized for its cel-shaded and cartoony aesthetic, but players have finally come around to loving it. The visuals of the game have aged better than most other games, and the HD remake on the Wii U only heightens what made it beautiful in the first place.
As mention multiple times already, nothing is more summer than the clear, blue oceans, and seeing the sun in the sky. Sailing on the seas, and watching seagulls fly by in Wind Waker is the perfect summertime scene. Rather than cool off on the beach, cool off by playing this chill video game.
