How to fix the Verifying Login Information Error issue on Steam

It's like Steam doesn't even know who you are.

With a complex technological ecosystem like Steam, you’re going to come across the odd bug. Sometimes things just aren’t working as they should, and users get stuck dealing with it. One of the most frustrating and recurrent issues many users have with Steam is finding themselves having to repeatedly verify their login information when using certain parts of the service like the in-client browser or some of the community elements.

Often the service simply logs them back in, making the problem merely annoying, but sometimes Steam gets stuck trying to verify the information, and users find themselves locked out of certain functionality altogether. Here are some things to try when encountering any issues with verifying login information on Steam.

Fixing Steam’s Verifying Login Information error

If you’re encountering any problems along these lines, there are a few things to try. The quickest and easiest method is to simply circumvent the client altogether and try accessing Steam a different way, like through a web browser or the mobile app. Sometimes this is enough to get around any issues.

If you’re still having problems, try clearing your in-client web browser data. This will clear all cookies and temporary files associated with the internal browser within Steam, and might solve any issues you’re having. Here’s how to do it:

  • In the Steam client, click “Steam” in the top-left and then “Settings”
  • Navigate to “Web Browser”
  • Click “Delete Web Browser Data”
  • Click “OK”

Alternatively, you can try and restart the Steam client in offline mode before reconnecting to the servers:

  • In the Steam client, click “Steam” in the top-left
  • Click “Go Offline…” and then “Enter Offline Mode”
  • Restart the client, and click “Start in Offline Mode” in the window that pops up
  • Once Steam has restarted, click “Steam” in the top-left
  • Click “Go Online…” and then “Leave Offline Mode”

Failing all that, sometimes the best thing to do is to simply wait. The Verifying Login Information issue is a recurring problem within the Steam client and seems to be particularly prevalent in periods of high traffic, such as during big sales on the platform. Usually, cases of this error tend to taper off as the sale or event winds down, so if you’re feeling patient you may be able to wait it out.
