The Hammer of Proving is a central part of Destiny 2’s Season of the Chosen. You can upgrade it at the War Table using reputation that you earn from finishing specific Weekly Challenges.
While this kind of boils to simple preference after a while, some of these are just a little more important than others, and will get you access to better rewards and engrams, which is really what Destiny 2 is all about.
It is important to understand that you can only unlock perks within a specific range of already unlocked perks. You also need to start with Tribute chest 1, you have no choice in the matter. So, taking that into account, the below is a pretty good upgrade path.

It’s a very solid route through all the upgrades that give logical rewards and grind-easing at the right times. As we said, it all boils down to choice and personal preference. You will eventually be able to unlock everything as you play through the season and finish the challenges.
