Minecraft has been around for over a decade and has one of the largest followings and player bases in gaming history. Part of the popularity is due in no small part to the different game modes available, including adventure mode.
Adventure mode is a unique game mode that limits the permissions of the players to prevent griefing or unwanted actions. It is designed to work on maps players have designed as challenges or unique story-driven adventures. As with all things Minecraft, modders, programmers, and creative players have gone hog wild with adventure mode, creating incredibly unique maps, immersive storylines, and unique challenges.
This list ranks some of the best adventure-mode maps based on a number of factors, including total number of downloads and recent popularity. These are vanilla only maps (sorry Pixelmon), so you will not need to install anything extra to play them. We have also left out any maps that have broken download links or links that were just too suspicious outside of what is normally found on the internet.
All of these maps are playable as is, but we recommend playing with Optifine for the best visual experience. Most of these maps can also be used on servers but be sure to give the creators the credit they deserve. All of these maps are available through PlanetMC.
Cops and Robbers series
There are four maps in this series, and they are all a blast to play on. Cops and Robbers was developed by Podcrash, a group of independent developers and map makers. The map can be downloaded from their website, along with their other content.
This map requires at least two players to participate, one cop and one robber, but you can have as many players as you want or as your server can handle. The game is based in a very well-built prison block. The cop’s duty is to order around the prisoners and keep the jail running like a normal prison, while the robbers need to look for any opportunity to escape and get out of the prison before they get caught by the cops.
You can add some immersion to the game by picking up or creating some cops and robbers skins to use in-game. This map requires Minecraft 1.15.2.
Witchcraft and Wizardry
Even if you have never read the books or seen the movies, you probably know your Hogwarts house. This map gives you the opportunity to enter the Wizarding World, where you can explore iconic locations like Platform 9 3/4, Diagon Alley, and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
As you progress through this RPG-style map, you will meet familiar faces, fight dark wizards and magical creatures, and gain access to a number of spells pulled straight from the books.
It’s obvious this map has had a lot of work put into it and it shows. It even comes pre-installed with a custom resource pack. Between the unique textures and the new mechanics, it is easy to forget you are actually playing Minecraft and not a Harry Potter RPG. This map is for version 1.13.2
This is a fun singleplayer adventure based in version 1.8.8. You play a thief breaking into an office building. This map, like others on this list, almost makes you forget you are playing Minecraft.
The game uses some command block expertise to create a very unique experience. You have to navigate twisting hallways, search offices, and avoid security cameras among other obstacles to reach your goal. The mission is story-driven with unique voice over.
Open World Zombie Apocalypse
This map combines features that have made games like Dead Island so popular. As the name implies, it is a huge post-apocalyptic open world.
When you join the map you get dropped into an expansive city where you and any friends you brought with you need to fight and explore to survive. This game features a number of boss fights and carefully scripted events to fill out the massive world. The author of this map has constructed farms, mountain ranges, abandoned highways, and a huge ruined city for you to loot to your heart’s desire. This map requires version 1.14.4 and is still being regularly updated.
Drehmal v2: Primordial
It is hard to decide where to even start to describe this map. It is absolutely gorgeous and is massive in size. The authors have used map editing tools like MCedit to create an entire continent to explore. There are hundreds of unique areas, new biomes, and a unique fast travel system to help you navigate it. Every part of this map has been carefully tailored, every hill and every tree carefully chosen.
This is a map meant for explorers. There is a main story, but you are not obligated to follow it all the way. There’s also a plethora of unique stories and quests for players to follow woven throughout the map. The world encourages exploration and each region has unique lore and features to discover.
The best part of this map is that there is more to come. The developers have released this map as part of a large world-building project they have been working on for quite some time. We are eagerly looking forward to the next installment. This map uses version 1.15.2 and may get a 1.16 update in the future. You can read some of the story behind this world on the PlanetMC page.
SCP Blocktainment Breach
This map is great if you are an SCP fan or a fan of creepypastas in general. This map is based on the popular fanmade SCP series and the indie horror game SCP: Containment Breach.
You will play as a class D personnel in an SCP containment facility. Your goal is to survive the escape of one of the many interesting and extremely dangerous creatures being studied in the facility. This game, like the indie game and the series it is based on, is very suspenseful. Just be sure to keep an eye on the timer for when you blink. This map runs on version 1.12.2 and you can learn more about the SCP universe from the official site.
This map is based on a beautifully terraformed island meant to test your Minecraft survival skills. It features numerous dungeons, boss fights, quests, and challenges for you to complete.
You and any friends you bring along will spawn on a sunken ship. There will be a book in an item frame near the bow right in front of you after you spawn. Read the book to learn what challenges are available on the island.
The map can be frustrating if you are not used to certain aspects of the game, but struggling through some of the dungeons with a few friends is a lot of fun. This map runs on version 1.13.2.
This map is not a recreation of a classic The Legend of Zelda game. Instead, it is a unique RPG experience based in the same universe as the official series.
You spawn as Link, or whatever you want to call yourself, on the small Island of Lun. There is a village, complete with animated buildings and scripted NPCs, that you call home. It also features a dungeon and plenty of monsters to fight and quests to complete.
This is the first episode in a series the author is actively working on. The finished project will feature a chain of several islands and quests for players to explore. The map uses version 1.14.4.
The Secret Island
The basis for this map is that you have been gifted a huge private wonderland by the estate of a late eccentric billionaire. The island is a huge place designed with multiplayer fun in mind. There are boat races, parkour courses, treehouses, and a lot more to explore and do.
This map has quite a bit of background behind it that the author gives to you right up front when you first enter. Past that, this is your own private amusement park for you to relax and have fun in both solo and with a few friends. This map runs on 1.13.2.
This map is very unique for this list. You spawn in on one of a number of islands floating up in the sky. The map is empty aside from the islands so watch your step or you will end up falling out of the world.
You are free to build and explore as much as you want within the confines of the many islands available. There are also dungeons and bosses to take on scattered across the islands. This world is your oyster, just be careful as you navigate it or you will end up falling into the void below.
There are two versions of this map available, one vanilla and one modded. We used the vanilla version for this list. Both maps require Minecraft version 1.12.2 to play. This map is one in a series of maps by the author, Flamingler, over on PlanetMC.
