Phil Spencer has once again discussed the console war topic, which has returned very strongly after Microsoft and Sony have reached an agreement over a partnership involving the use of Azure’s cloud platform for game streaming, AI, image sensors and more.
Chatting with Fortune, the executive vice president at gaming at Microsoft has shared that he has seen a lot of people asking him why they were working with the enemy, and being disappointed at the fact that this alliance was being worked on.
“I’m always listening to the community, but the people who want to see others fail in order for the green team to succeed — that’s not me,” Spencer told Fortune (via ComicBook), distancing himself from such positions. “There were people when the Sony deal was announced; I could see it online saying ‘what are you doing helping them out?'”
“And it’s like, we’ve had years and years of a relationship with Sony,” he added about the partnership. “Sony shipped PCs, and they had Windows on it; they use our development tools to build games. This idea that the only way for any of us to succeed is by pulling down someone else just isn’t the way that the industry works today. It just isn’t.”
It’s clear that there’s no more place for console war in the world as it is today, but it’s also worth noting that Microsoft has built over the course of the years a powerful position in the cloud market and is making business evaluations when allowing Sony to use its platform for a game streaming service.
I mean, if you really care about Microsoft, and even if you’re still at a place where the console is so important to you, then you should see how this deal will be beneficial for the company, not only for Sony.
