The 'Minecraft' Movie Has a New Release Date

Minecraft Movie

The live-action Minecraft movie will release on March 4, 2022, after years of delays.

A movie based on the smash hit has been in the works since at least 2014, but details about it have always been hard to come by. The movie now has a solid release date of March 4, 2022. A recent post on Minecraft.net says the movie will tell "the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld."

Peter Sollett will direct the film, and while he does not have a significant blockbuster release under his belt, he has won awards for his work from the Sundance Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, and others, according to IMDb. Warner Bros. is the production company behind the film, which could be good news for fans: Its latest release, Shazam!, is a box-office hit, and the upcoming Pokémon Detective Pikachu looks to follow the same path.

As promising as an award-winning director and gaming-friendly production studio may sound, the Minecraft movie has dealt with its fair share of hiccups over the past several years. In 2014, Variety reported that Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb) would direct the Minecraft movie. In 2016, The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the movie would release on May 25, 2019, with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney taking Levy’s place as director. McElhenney left the production in 2018, according to TheWrap, bringing us to this week’s news that the film will finally release in 2022 with Sollett at the helm.

Only time will tell what a live-action version of Minecraft will look like, and with a little luck, the movie might get by without any further delays.
