According to VG247 sources, contacted as part of a feature that discloses why downgrades happen in video games, an agreement between Microsoft and Ubisoft prevented The Division from being better on PS4.

Microsoft and Ubisoft had a promotional deal for The Division, which had the first couple DLC available first on Xbox One and all the ads for the game were Xbox branded, you might recall.

Because of this, based on what these sources claim, Ubisoft wanted to “prevent issues with Microsoft” and therefore vetoed the possibility that the game could be better on PlayStation 4 rather than Xbox One.

“[Occasionally], the level of parity in the game needs to be identical, therefore you reduce quality to ensure that everything looks of equal quality,” the sources say.

“On The Division, Xbox had a deal with Ubisoft, and part of that deal was to ensure that the PS4 version did not look better than it. The resolution, frame rates, and density of assets could have been higher on PS4, but this was vetoed to prevent issues with Microsoft.”

It’s worth noting that, based on this report, we get that it was Ubisoft that wanted to prevent issues with Microsoft and not Microsoft that actively worked in order to have The Division better on Xbox One.

At any rate, if confirmed, it would be quite disappointing for video gamers overall. We’re getting used to DLC being provided first on a specific platform because of commercial reasons, but the fact that a developer could be working actively in order to have one version worse than the other is, well, totally wrong.

We’ll update you in case Ubisoft or Microsoft have comments to offer on the matter.
