During the latest meeting with the investors, Electronic Arts has discussed the possibility of building a free to play competitor for Fortnite, something that has not been ruled out.
EA is going to have its own battle royale mode in Battlefield V, as revealed back at the E3 2018, but that’s probably not going to compete in terms of pure user numbers with Fortnite as it is a regular paid video game.
“We’re interested in experimenting with a free-to-play standalone game that might be in a shooter genre or another genre,” CFO Blake Jorgensen said when asked about making an alternative to Fortnite.
“But I don’t think that’s how we’re looking at the Battlefield stuff right now,” he said, hinting at the fact it could be a totally different IP. When you think about active FPS brands in the EA portfolio, on top of Battlefield, there’s Titanfall.
Anyway, Jorgensen and Electronic Arts are going to keep talking about this matter in the coming “months and years,” he teased, which means that experimentation is really shaping up to become a proper product.
What do you think is this set to be, and when it’s happening? Could it be too late if such a thing drops in one year or a couple years from now?
