Cross-play is still the ground where Microsoft and Sony have the biggest differences in approach during the current generation of consoles, and it doesn’t look like things are going to change anytime soon.
At IFA, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida offered a new comment about the situation, stating that the platform holder believes PlayStation is the best place to play so you don’t really need that cross-play thing with other consoles.
“On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief,” he said.
Talking about this statement, corporate vice president at Xbox Mike Ybarra replied on Twitter that, according to him, Sony is “still not listening to gamers” when it comes to this topic.
“Still isn’t listening to gamers. All games should be cross play and progression with the right input flexibility and gamer options,” he told his followers in a share of a The Verge news article on Twitter.
“We run Windows and Console. Larger gaming audience who wants to play together. Gaming is diverse, if you only serve to bring joy to part of an audience then you are behind in many, many ways.”
So, again, it doesn’t look like distances between Sony and Microsoft are going to change throughout the generation, and that’s quite disappointing we must say. We’ll see in the future whether there’s something different on the horizon, but we wouldn’t be holding our breath for that.
