Connection issues are the worst enemy in any online game. With a game like Apex Legends, where a few seconds of lag can mean the difference between winning and losing, connection problems are even more obnoxious. There’s no amount of skill that can overcome a wonky internet connection, but depending on the issue, you might be able to fix it before the next match.
There are four kinds of errors you might see: Latency, Packet Loss, Congestion, and Prediction Error. We’ve put together some background information on why each of these errors could be happening, and what you can do to fix them.
Latency – Speedometer icon
The Latency icon, which looks like a speedometer, will show up when your ping is too high. In less technical terms, that means it’s taking too long for your game to tell the server what actions you’re taking. If you have high latency, you’ll notice a delay from the time you hit the button to when your character actually moves or shoots on-screen.
High latency could be caused by a number of different problems. You may have a poor connection to the Internet, or your Internet Service Provider may be having trouble. It could also be a problem on the game’s server, but that’s pretty unlikely. If it keeps happening, try resetting your router or modem. If that doesn’t help, contact your ISP for more troubleshooting.
Packet Loss – Red squares icon
The Packet Loss icon shows two squares with a dotted square between them. Packet loss happens when all the actions you take aren’t communicated to the game’s server. Your character may freeze for a while and then bounce around the screen, or you might find yourself shooting at someone who isn’t taking damage. It’s very similar to high latency issues.
Packet loss is usually caused by a problem with your connection. You’ll fix it the same way you would a latency issue: reset your connection, and if the issue persists, contact your ISP.
Congestion – Sideways fork icon
The Congestion error looks like a sideways fork or a branching path. You’ll see this when the server is too busy, either because too many people are playing, or because the game itself is having issues.
When this error pops up, all you can do is wait. EA is usually pretty quick to post about congestion issues on the Apex Legends official Twitter account, so check there if you think there may be a widespread issue.
Prediction Error – Dotted line icon
The Prediction Error looks like a diagonal line with dots on it. It means that the server is having trouble predicting the movement of another player. This is another error you can’t do much about because it lies on the server’s end. Check the Apex Legends server status on social media while shaking your fist angrily.
