Don't lose your progress.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

There is a lot to do in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. As you build up your island, explore, harvest resources, meet new people, and work for good old Tom Nook, you will be doing a lot of work. You don’t want to lose any progress, so you may be wondering how to save your game.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons features an autosave function, so it will automatically save your progress for you through your play session. As long as you ensure that you do not power off the Switch while the autosave icon is on the screen, the system should not let you down.

Save Screen

If you have decided that you are finished playing, and wish to save your progress and quit the game, you need to hit the minus (-) button on the left JoyCon. The game will ask you if you are finished playing, and would like to save your progress. Hit A, then select the option to save and end the game.

That’s it, a very simple save system but a little confusing due to the lack of a traditional Save Menu.
