What Are Tuning Points in Star Wars: Galactic Racer?

Tuning Points in Star Wars: Galactic Racer form an integral part of anyone's build. But before you craft your perfect vehicle, just what are these points, anyway?

Tuning Points in Star Wars: Galactic Racer are the equivalent of permanent stat upgrades you get in your standard roguelike experience. You earn them to make sure you get a stronger start in every Tour, but there’s no guarantee they will take you away from the mistakes that cost you your previous runs in the first place. Either way, Tuning Points are a surefire way to ensure you have a better shot at surviving your next run.

Since every Tour Event lets you give Upgrades to your stats, you’re probably already aware of the stats where you can spend your Tuning Points. But it may help to look at them from the perspective of Tuning Points, especially when their cost to upgrade increases the more you improve your vehicle.

A quick recap of Tuning Points

The Upgrade Vehicle screen

Tuning Points and Upgrade Points function the same way in your Galactic Racer experience, but whereas Upgrades disappear after you finish the run, spent Tuning Points are permanent to the vehicle you spent them on. Here are important considerations:

  • Used in between Tours: You can only use Tuning Points before and in between Tours.
  • Each Level gained boosts top Speed: Regardless of your build, you will always get faster as you level up.
  • Each vehicle has 6 stats, with 10 bars each: Each stat has 10 bars you can upgrade, and six of them you can do so with Tuning Points. There are three big bars that you can only increase with Upgrade points.
  • Only until Level 15: Every stat upgrade gives your vehicle a Level, and each succeeding Level has an increased Tuning Point cost. A “stat upgrade” means a bar.
  • Only 15 bars of upgrades: Even though there are 42 bars you can fill, you can only choose 15 of them. This is where starter vehicle builds matter, as the rest of the bars you have to fill during the Tour and only temporarily.

Ramjet

  • Priority: High

The Ramjet is the equivalent of nitrous in Galactic Racer, and it’s a longer, much stronger top speed boost compared to the Afterburner. Of course, with great power comes great potential for exploding. Use the Ramjet too much, and you’d end up in the dangerous redline zone. And skirt the line for too long, and you’d explode on the spot.

But if you know your way around your builds, you can invest in the Ramjet for raw speed. Make it your first or second stat priority, so you enjoy explosive power whenever you need it. Pair Ramjet upgrades with a Cooled-based build so it won’t overheat as fast, to the point where you can even have unlimited Ramjet.

Afterburner

  • Priority: High

The Afterburner is your go-to short boost for Galactic Racer. It gets used up quickly but refills almost just as fast, making it a reliable source of momentum to build your top speed. The faster you go with the Afterburner, the faster it cools the Ramjet (hence the name, after-you-burn).

If you keep on slowing down on your turns, you use the Afterburner when you exit. The Afterburner is ideally the second priority after the Ramjet, but you’d want this your first priority if your build rewards actions (takedowns, jumps, etc.) with Afterburner refills.

Move

  • Priority: High, 3-4 on Speeder Bike and Skim Speeder, 0-3 on Landspeeder

Each vehicle in Galactic Racer comes with a special maneuver, and all of them are meant to assist you when taking corners. Being the traditional car lookalike, the Landspeeder can Drift. Then the speed-oriented Speeder has the Kinetic Burst, which gives you a speed boost after turns. Lastly, the Knife Edge lets your Skim Speeder bank on the side to conquer tight corners.

Points to put in the Move stat depend on your vehicle type. Ideally, you should invest in Knife Edge and Kinetic Boost so you can use them to take turns, since you can also pair them with the Ramjet. For the Landspeeder it’s so-so, as others recommend the Drift while others prefer the plain brake, and some even use both of them at the same time. Invest based on your turning priority.

Resilience

  • Priority: Medium, 2-3 to start

Unlike other racing games, you only have a limited number of Crashes in Galactic Racer. Crash into walls often enough and you’d Wrecked Out, resetting your progress. And in a game where getting the wrong touch can send you spiraling hood-first into a wall, Resilience is the stat to help absorb scrapes and reduce malfunctions.

Upgrade Resilience if you’re using a more fragile vehicle like the Speeder Bike or the Skim Speeder. These two rides are prone to Crashing on hazardous environments. You won’t need Resilience as much in Multiplayer since Shield can help you cover most threats.

Battery

  • Priority: Low, 3-4 should be enough

Your vehicle in Galactic Racer has Abilities that can help you control some aspect of the race. Maybe they help you recover from malfunctions, protect you from Crashes, or outright concuss the enemy. All of them are dependent on Energy, and your Battery determines just how much Energy you carry at any given time.

Invest in the Battery if your build is Ability-heavy, especially if your other Parts help you recover Energy or recharge Abilities when you do certain actions. Don’t prioritize this as much if you’re more into getting fast, and you can easily recover when opponents try to play dirty.

Cornering

  • Priority: Low, at least 3 and only add after Ramjet

Turning is easily a racer’s worst enemy in Galactic Racer gameplay, especially if it’s a corner they didn’t expect or if they didn’t get their timings right. And on tracks with a lot of S-curves or tight corners, you’re going to get yourself in a lot of Crashes. This is where Cornering comes in, as it improves your base turning even without using your special move.

Unlike other stats, Cornering is heavily reliant on what vehicle you want to use. Landspeeders can use Cornering with or without the Drift, so Cornering can be a great asset to conquer pesky turns. For Skims and Bikes, Cornering is a lesser priority if you already know your way around Kinetic Bursts and Knife Edges.
