Control’s and Alan Wake’s worlds collide in the former’s AWE expansion and, with it, comes a new environmental hazard. The Darkness, a black oozing substance, appears in the Oldest House’s Investigations Sector and, like the mold and plant quests, you’re given the Burn the Dark mission by resident janitor Ahti.
There are three pools of Darkness to burn away in three areas of the Investigations Sector. You will know that they are nearby if you see a light that you can pick up or hear a faint screaming noise. You must shine the light on the Darkness to eradicate it. Once all three areas are cleansed, you will receive rewards for your efforts.
Service Ducts
There are three pieces of Darkness to remove from the Service Ducts. All three are found at ceiling level, so you don’t have to go searching for them. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, next to a hole in the floor that you will drop down, that you can grab to burn the Darkness away.
Eagle Limited AWE
After you have defeated Shaded Hartman in this area, you can seek out and destroy the patches of Darkness. First, head up the elevator at the back of the room to grab light from this first-floor office.
For the first piece of Darkness, head to the train carriage Altered Item, and look to your right over the orange mobile lab. Levitate and dash across to its roof and look up. Shine the light on a metal grate here to destroy this Darkness.
The other two are located on the rafters high up in the room. Levitate to the metal girders above the train carriage, and then levitate and dart onto the walkway in front of you. Head left to destroy one piece of Darkness, and then backtrack along the walkway to find the other one in a shaded corner.
Utility Corridor
The last three pieces are located here. You can access this area from the Turntable Control Point. Levitate up from the turntable, and dash through the glass into an office above. Grab the light on the table to your left.
Head into the office behind the light to burn away the first bit of Darkness. Next, head into the Utility Corridor, and burn the Darkness that’s in front of you. Finally, follow the corridor into the next open door. Immediately turn left, head to the back wall, and burn the Darkness away over some crates on wheels.
