World of Warcraft’s Battle for Azeroth expansion features ten five-player dungeons, with more on the way through patches. While eight of these dungeons are available in Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Mythic+ difficulties, there are two dungeons that are available only at Mythic, and Mythic+, difficulty levels: Kings’ Rest and Siege of Boralus.

Access to these dungeons must be unlocked before entry, through the completion of achievement and reputation goals. Each dungeon’s story is tied to a specific faction (Kings’ Rest to Alliance and Siege of Boralus to Horde) and unlocking the opposing faction’s dungeon will require a bit more finesse.

Veteran players likely remember the old “attunement” requirements of classic Warcraft and The Burning Crusade expansion, requiring completion of lengthy questlines and numerous dungeons before a player could enter major raids. Thankfully, the requirements for these two new Battle for Azeroth Mythic dungeons are not nearly as difficult and serve more as a time gate rather than requiring proof of skill.

Kings’ Rest

Kings’ Rest is a Mythic-only dungeon that follows the Horde’s storyline focused on the Zandalari empire. Check out this video on how to find the entrance once you have it unlocked:

How to unlock King’s Rest on a Horde character

Horde characters will have this dungeon automatically unlocked upon earning the achievement Zandalar Forever!, which requires completion of major questlines in Horde zones. Many players will have earned this achievement by the time they’ve hit level 120 just from playing the expansion’s leveling content.

The achievement requires completion of story quests in Zuldazar and Nazmir, as well as the Blood Gate questline, available from King Rastakhan after completing the two previous achievements. You’ll also need to complete story quests in Vol’dun to earn Secrets in the Sands, but don’t let the large number of quests in the zone scare you off. The actual storyline quest chain is not much longer than other zones. If your main focus is on getting the achievement for the dungeon unlock, you’ll want to save all of those sidequests for later (no matter how charming those Vulpera are).

How to unlock Kings’ Rest on an Alliance character

As both factions’ leveling journeys take place on completely separate continents, Alliance players will not automatically progress towards unlocking King’s Rest while leveling.

Kings’ Rest is unlocked through progression in the expansion’s War Campaign storyline, which follows the Alliance’s efforts to establish footholds throughout the Horde dominant continent of Zandalar. As the War Campaign is intended to be long-running throughout the expansion, you’re only able to progress to a certain point early in the expansion. With a little bit of work you can reach the point to unlock Kings’ Rest in about a week, depending on how much time you have available to complete World Quests.

Players will typically be nearly halfway done with the War Campaign storyline by the time they hit 120. Upon reaching max level, a new questline will become available once a character has earned Friendly reputation with the 7th Legion faction. Additional storyline quests will unlock at various reputation levels, with the most important (for unlocking the dungeon) becoming available once 7500 reputation has been earned at Honored level with 7th Legion. Upon completion of this questline, access to Kings’ Rest will be granted.

TL;DR requirements:

  • Complete all available War Campaign questlines that unlock by earning reputation with 7th Legion
  • Reach 7.5k into Honored with 7th Legion
  • Complete the War Campaign questline beginning with “Operation: Gryphon’s Claw

Siege of Boralus

Siege of Boralus is a Mythic-only dungeon that follows the Alliance’s storyline focus on Lady Ashmane’s efforts to take Boralus under her rule. Here’s how to find the entrance to this dungeon once it’s unlocked:

How to unlock Siege of Boralus on an Alliance character

Alliance characters will have this dungeon automatically unlocked upon earning the achievement Kul Tourist, which requires completion of major questlines in Alliance zones. Many players will have earned this achievement by the time they’ve hit level 120 just from playing the expansion’s leveling content.

This achievement requires completion of story questlines in Drustva and Stormsong Valley. You’ll also need to complete story quests in Tiragarde Sound to earn A Sound Plan which, again, has a plethora of available quests (similar to the Horde’s Vol’dun zone). You only need to complete those which are part of the main story, so you can save all of those sidequests for later when you’ve got the time.

How to unlock Siege of Boralus on a Horde character

Horde players will also have to work a bit harder to unlock the opposing faction’s dungeons. Like Kings’ Rest for Alliance, Siege of Boralus is unlocked by completion of the Horde War Campaign questlines. There is a reputation requirement for progression through this story. Horde players must earn 7500 reputation into Honored reputation level with the The Honorbound. Upon doing so, the questline beginning with “Operation: Bottom Feeder” will unlock and completion of this stage of the War Campaign will grant access to Siege of Boralus.

TL;DR requirements:

  • Complete all available War Campaign questlines that unlock by earning reputation with The Honorbound
  • Reach 7.5k into Honored with The Honorbound
  • Complete the War Campaign questline beginning with “Operation: Bottom Feeder

How to farm the reputation required for unlocking the dungeons

The biggest challenge in gaining access to these dungeons is reaching the reputation levels with the War Campaign factions. There are three main methods of earning reputation with 7th Legion (Alliance) or The Honorbound (Horde):

  • Completing every currently available War Campaign quest
  • Completing World Quests that reward reputation with the respective faction
  • Completing the weekly Island Expedition quest
  • Completing missions at the Mission Table that reward reputation with the respective faction

You’ll be able to complete War Campaign quests only up to a certain point, and you’ll have to get lucky for the right follower missions to pop up. You’ll definitely want to make sure to complete your weekly Island Expedition quest, as there’s a substantial reputation reward (1500 reputation) as well as a good-sized chunk of Azerite. Also, be sure to complete World Quests for 7th Legion or The Honorbound whenever available. The add-on World Quests List makes it easy to see all active World Quests, so you can make sure not to miss any reputation opportunities!

Use Contracts to maximize reputation gains

Since you’ll already be completing World Quests to earn reputation with The Honorbound and 7th Legion, you might want to pick up Contracts for the other Battle for Azeroth factions. Contracts are crafted by Scribes (players with Inscription) and can be purchased on the Auction House.

These consumable items award ten reputation for the chosen faction for each World Quest completed. This allows you to earn reputation with Champions of Azeroth by completing any World Quest, not just those which would regularly reward such reputations. You can have one Contract active at a time, and the buff lasts for seven days. They even persist through death! Unfortunately, there’s no Contracts for the War Campaign reputations, but they’re still nice to have.
