Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey throws the player into a stressful tutorial to find a missing baby and return him to the clan.
In Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, the game opens with a violent bang, killing off a clan member and leaving an orphan stranded in the jungle. From here there are two options: take the fearful orphan home to his clan, or help him hide in the brush until help arrives.
This point in the game is to make it a crazy tutorial, as it does give some brief advice on controls. Still, it’s a nerve-wracking spot to be in for the new player with the added fear effects all over the screen and the confusing controls, keeping that new primate alive is terrifying.
The first option is to guide the baby home. IGN has a brief guide on both options, thankfully, as taking the baby home doesn’t seem to be the most obvious choice in the game. The tutorial even pushes the player to hide. Using the baby’s intelligence, you can locate the diamond that represents home. Players need to battle the baby’s fear the entire way. However, upon returning home, the baby is greeted by happy adults and elders.
The second option is to hide. Players who choose to hide need to locate a square icon, identify it to see if it’s a hiding place. If it is, run to it. Once there, they can press a button to hide.
Finding the Baby Hominid
For players who chose to hide, they must now locate the orphaned hominid playing as an adult in the clan. As the new adult, players make their way through the forest using their senses and intelligence to follow the sound of the frightened orphan’s cries. According to Game Revolution, when using your senses and hearing, the baby’s sounds come up as a yellow circle. If, when sensing, you do not see the yellow ring on your screen, move further into the forest.
Where the baby is depends on where the player chose to hide. They could be near the clan’s settlement or quite far away. Using the sense and focus abilities are critical in this brief tutorial.
For some, the baby’s location gets marked on the screen, leading them directly to them and making the process very simple.
Once players find the baby, they need to soothe it and take it back to the clan. At which point, the players are free to do whatever they would like to evolve and progress.
