The biggest new games coming this August

We are well and truly into the Summer now, and games releases have taken a backseat to the sun, sand, and summer blockbuster movies, from Spiderman: Far From Home to The Lion King. Because of this, like July, August will see a fairly small number of big releases when compared to the colder months, especially this September.

But like July, there’s still a thirst for some great action in the video game market. While there are gamers, there will be new games to satisfy that ever lingering itch. Also like July, there are still some big games that you can expect to see on storefronts, physically or digitally this August and we are here to highlight the biggest ones for you. With that in mind, here are the biggest and best games that are due to come out this August.

Mega publisher EA launches the latest in their long-running football game, just in time for the preseason. This year will feature a new mode called Face of the Franchise which EA describes as a “personalised career campaign” that will take you from the early years of college football to the draft picks, and onto the Superbowl. Expect the usual roster updates, improvements to graphics and animation, and gameplay tweaks that adjust the play enough for fans to feel the difference from last year’s game.

Control – PS4, Xbox One, PC – August 27th

Control – Official Gameplay Trailer

Control is the next game from Remedy, releasing August 27 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Remedy Entertainment don’t know how to make ordinary games. If you’ve ever played a Max Payne game, or Alan Wake, you’ll understand the influence that they have had on the games industry over the years. Pioneers of the surreal, now they’ve created Control with 505 Games, a supernatural, psychological third-person action thriller where a special gun provides protagonist Jesse with some extraordinary powers as you must traverse the mind-bending Federal Bureau of Control. If you still need convincing, the trailer above should whet that appetite.

World of Warcraft: Classic – PC – August 27th

World of Warcraft Classic Announcement

Get ready for a trip through time as a classic server option is coming to World of Warcraft. Keep an eye out for details on http://worldofwarcraft.com

If you don’t know what World of Warcraft is after the last 15 years, perhaps consider this release of Classic, a re-run of the original game without the expansions. No reliance on boosts, the convenience of the Look for Group system that made getting a group and into a dungeon simple, and the dungeons in the game being super simple until later in the game. Everything requires time, skill, and cooperation to do well, just like the good old days. It might just seem like a nostalgia trip, but it should act as a lesson to Blizzard in the classic ways of MMO making, and if it does well, may help establish a new philosophy for the next expansion, instead of the easy level, the repetitive grind of the current meta. Having played the BETA, it’s still great fun too, especially seeing all of the pre-Cataclysm areas again.

Astral Chain – Nintendo Switch – August 30th

ASTRAL CHAIN – Nintendo Switch Trailer – Nintendo E3 2019

The few survivors of a massive global disaster gather together in a futuristic megacity. Now it’s your job to protect them against otherworldly invaders-but you’re not alone as a member of a special police task force equipped with sentient armaments called Legions.

A Platinum Games release is always a special time. They are a developer who makes consistently high-quality games when given time and a good budget (Legend of Korra’s relative cheap budget proving its downfall). While we didn’t see Scalebound this generation (yet anyway), we are getting Astral Chain, a third-person action-adventure where you and your ‘Legion’ companion are tasked with sending aliens to their doom after an interdimensional rift floods them into the world. Also, you pick up trash. Yeah.

The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan – PS4, Xbox One, PC – August 30th

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan – Multiplayer Reveal Trailer | PS4

https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/the-dark-pictures-man-of-medan-ps4/ Two multiplayer modes are coming in The Dark Pictures Anthology – Man of Medan! The Shared Story Mode, which is a 2 Player Online mode and a Movie Night Mode, an Up to 5-player Offline Co-op. The Dark Pictures Anthology – Man of Medan is available for Pre-Order on PlayStation 4!

With a name like Man of Medan, you might think this is an indie title. But alas, this is UK developer Supermassive Games, the team behind fan-favorite PS4 horror-thon Until Dawn, and with this, they hope to bring back the scares in a big way after the somewhat disappointing budget title Hidden Agenda. A group of friends on a boat trip gets struck by a storm and end up on a ship at the bottom of the ocean, only this ship is harboring ghostly fugitives, including its captain, and like Until Dawn, it’s your job to guide the team to safety. Expect spooks, and this time, co-op multiplayer! And multiplatform!
