How the Great League Remix and Retro Cup work in Pokémon Go

What Pokémon team will you use?

When Niantic announced how Season 7 of Pokémon Go’s Battle League will work, not too much had changed, beyond the rewards for the many ranks. What was talked about were two upcoming cups introduced in that season, the Great League Remix and the Retro Cup.

These will be special Battle League competitions happening alongside the other Ultra and Master League competitions. These feature certain restraints on players competing in this cup, forcing them to use Pokémon they normally wouldn’t use.

Both competitions will have 1,500 CP maximum requirement for every Pokémon.

How the Great League Remix cup works

When season 7 starts on March 1, players can freely compete for the two weeks it lasts. At the end of it, on March 15, Niantic will tally up all of the Pokémon used by everyone who battles in it and figure the top 10 Pokémon used throughout the competition. For the Great League Remix cup, those top 10 Pokémon will be removed from the Great League, and players can use any Pokémon, except those on that list.

By removing 10 of the strongest contenders in this competition, players can be more creative and potentially aggressive with their favorite Great League Pokémon teams. The list will be revealed shortly after the Great League battles wrap up, so expect more details by then.

How the Retro Cup works

For the Retro Cup, players will only be able to use the first 15 Pokémon types available in the game. This means players will not use any Dark, Steel, or Fairy-type Pokémon in these battles.

These are all of the Pokémon types available for the Retro Cup: Bug, Dragon, Electric, Fighting, Fire, Flying, Ghost, Grass, Ground, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, and Water. The overall options haven’t been chopped down too much, so trainers won’t find too much trouble making teams, but Dragon, Ghost, and Psychic-type Pokémon will likely have a bit more sway in this competition than previous ones.

Both the Great League Remix and Retro Cup will take place sometime in Season 7, which will be happening from March 1 to June 1.
