Shiny Pokémon Guide and Complete List for Pokémon Go

Shiny Pokémon are one of the greatest treasures of the Pokémon series. Shinies are notoriously difficult to obtain in main series Pokémon games, so it comes as no surprise that in Pokémon Go these cosmetic variants are highly sought after by Trainers. At this time, there are a total of 74 available Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Go. Shiny models for all currently available Pokémon in Pokémon Go can be found in the game's files, so it's only a matter of time before we see new Shinies added. Shiny Pokémon are regularly added during in-game event celebrations, such as Pokémon Community Days and other, seasonal events.

What's so great about a Shiny Pokémon?

The benefits of Shiny Pokémon are purely cosmetic. They feature an alternative color palette and have no advantages over non-Shiny Pokémon. You aren’t guaranteed any special IVs or high CP stats. They look cooler (well, mostly), and that’s about it.

Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon use the same color palettes as those in the main series. Therefore, even though hardly any Shinies are available in Pokémon at this time, you can at least check out what your favorite Pokémon will look like once it’s added. While Shinies are typically added to Pokémon Go during events, there are no time-limited Shiny forms at this time. Once a Pokémon’s Shiny version has been added, you’ll always have a chance to encounter or hatch a Shiny version of that species.

What are the odds of obtaining a Shiny Pokémon?

The talented Trainers over at The Silph Road have deduced that you have a 1 in 450 chance of encountering the Shiny version of a Pokémon on average. These odds may be temporarily increased for certain Pokémon during specific events, as with the recent addition of Shiny Minun and Plusle for Pokémon Go’s 2nd Anniversary celebration and the upcoming release of Shiny Wingull and Pelipper at the Pokémon Go Safari Zone event in Yokosuka, Japan.

How to obtain Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Go

Shinies in Pokémon Go can be obtained by encountering wild Pokémon, through hatching eggs, and by battling Pokémon in Raids. Pokémon encountered by completing Field Research tasks also have a chance to be Shiny. You can see if a Pokémon is Shiny only after you engage it; the map will not display a Pokémon’s Shiny version model. A Shiny Pokémon will retain its Shiny status upon being evolved or traded.

Raid-exclusive Shiny Pokémon

Certain Pokémon, such as Mawile and Legendary Pokémon, are not available in the wild and can only be caught in Raids. Raid Pokémon do feature higher than usual shiny chances, so if your favorite Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Go happens to be an available Raid boss, you’re in luck. Additionally, you’ll have a boosted chance to obtain Shiny versions of any Legendary Pokémon featured in Raids. There is no controllable means of increasing your chance to encounter a Shiny Pokémon, though certain situations will benefit from increased Shiny rates.

Obtaining Shiny Pokémon through Field Research

In addition to the methods outlined below, occasionally Shiny Pokémon can be obtained in Field Research Encounters, which are rewarded for completing Field Research tasks. The rotation of available tasks changes monthly, so if there isn't an active task featuring a Pokémon with a Shiny variant, this method has not been listed below as a potential source for that Pokémon. We will keep this list up-to-date as Field Research tasks are changed and as new Shiny Pokémon are added.

Shiny Legendary Pokémon

Legendary Pokémon are only available to catch during the specific periods in which their Raid encounters are active in Pokémon Go. Whenever a Legendary Pokémon is available to be challenged, you’ll have a chance to encounter its Shiny version. Raid boss Pokémon have an increased chance of being Shiny, so your chances of obtaining the Shiny version of these Legendary Pokémon is higher than that of normal Pokémon. These special Raids are regularly rotated in and out, so be sure to keep an eye on the latest in-game events.

Some Legendary Pokémon, including the Legendary birds Articuno, Moltres and Zapdos, have recently been added as Research Breakthrough rewards, offering players the opportunity to potentially encounter Shiny versions of these Pokémon when they are not available in regular Raid rotation. Only a single Pokémon is available each month through this method, and you can only encounter a maximum of four Breakthrough Pokémon each month (each requiring seven days’ worth of research stamps), so you may have significantly less opportunities to encounter a Shiny version as you would doing Raids.
