Using the setting of Waterdeep, the game is free to download and available now.
Canadian Mobile games developer Ludia has launched a new game based on Dungeons and Dragons for iOS and Android devices and includes both a single-player campaign and multiplayer (Player Vs. Player) modes.
Named Warriors of Waterdeep, the game has been made in partnership with the franchise’s publishers Wizards of the Coast, and functions in the same way that any seasoned Dungeons and Dragons tabletop player would expect:
“Players will need to summon a team of heroes as the great city of Waterdeep is threatened by powerful dark forces. We believe fans of the franchise will find Warriors of Waterdeep stays true to the spirit of Dungeons & Dragons with challenging storylines and innovative turn-based gameplay.”
Created in the 1970s by series designers Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, the tabletop series has grown in size as each edition has been released, and are currently about six years into the latest edition, currently the fifth edition. The internet has made playing with friends much easier, while the popularity of the game has boomed thanks to the advent of podcasts and video series. Critical Role, a Twitch broadcast campaign hosted by voice actor and dungeon master Matt Mercer, stars many famous voice actors including Laura Bailey (Jaina Proudmore from World of Warcraft) and Ashley Johnson (Ellie from The Last of Us), and 2nd in the list of most subscribed channels on Twitch as the time of writing. They even have the honour of the fifth highest funded project in Kickstarter history.
Many video-games have taken heavy influences from the Dungeons and Dragons universes over the years. Bioware’s original Neverwinter Nights and its sequel by Obsidian Entertainment used many game mechanics that were part of the 3 and 3.5 editions of the game while also being part of the Forgotten Realms D&D setting. World of Warcraft’s spells and classes take heavy influence from that of D&D, while Planescape: Torment and Baldur’s Gate I & II used rulesets that were a part of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition.
Waterdeep is also a renowned part of the Forgotten Realms universe, so both regular players and Dungeon Masters will have a familiar setting to experience in the game.
You can download the game now on the Google Play Store for Android and the App Store for iOS.
